Picking up the Pieces

When I came to Community Safety Network, I felt like I was in so many little pieces. Immediately, CSN felt like a secure place. I knew my kids and I would be safe in a shelter. While living there, I started to feel like I had a family at CSN – a family that would help me put together a plan but also make time to listen to me when I needed to share what I was thinking or how I was feeling. 

With their support, I started to put those little pieces back together. It didn’t happen overnight, and it is hard to feel like things are really changing when it happens over time. I always had someone to remind me of the steps I had already taken and the things I had already accomplished. It felt like a ball that kept rolling and getting bigger – pushing me along toward my goals like getting a better job.

It felt safe to ask for help. At first, I didn’t know what I needed or how to figure out what I needed. And it is so hard to ask for help and not feel judged. I was never judged. CSN offers information in the best way – as choices you get to consider – and you can make a choice or not without feeling like it is right or wrong.

Sometimes, I wished that someone would just tell me what to do. In my life before coming to CSN, that happened a lot. It was nerve-wracking at first to only have options and information. I felt lost. But with practice, I realized that I could make decisions for myself that weren’t influenced by other people. I made decisions about my kids and their continued relationship with their father that felt right to me, and CSN provided tools and knowledge to help me make those decisions. 

After two years in the transitional housing program, I will become a homeowner. I can’t believe I am saying those words!  I feel independent.  My kids are safe and thriving.  I have a  great job.  I can walk into any space with confidence.  I know that my confidence is in me and not dependent on anyone else, thanks to the kindness and support I experienced at CSN.
